Blair from “The Shameful Sheep” writes some pretty funny stories about her daily thoughts and life… and so it figures that a Q & A by her will be funny too. It helps that the questions are a bit unusual and not something you would expect to find out about someone.
Since I feel like sharing some unsolicited facts about myself, here you go:
1. Who are you named after?
My mother named me after the second wife of a famous German poet. This means that not only was I kind of cursed to hear my name mispronounced by English-speakers my entire life, I was also destined to dedicate my life to poetry, or marry a poet… something like that. Also, “Dorothea” comes from the Ancient Greek for gift of god, which is how I think of myself in relation to the world. You’re welcome.
2. Do you like your handwriting?
I used to have the kind of cursive handwriting that was so unique (and intricately cursive, yet too intricate to be called “awful”) that only a few select people in my classes were handed my papers for peer-checking, because they were the only ones who could decipher it. These people were also my best friends. Now, my handwriting, like my demeanor, have settled down a bit. I still like my cursive more than my print.
5. Do you still have your tonsils?
Yep. Isn’t that such a great fact to know about me?!
6. Would you bungee jump?
Probably yes, but only after freaking out about it the hours before hand. I’m scared of heights, but also super-competitive and like to take on a challenge. I also like adrenaline rushes, hence running.
9. What is the first thing you notice about people?
Whether they are the kind of people who look you in the eye. I’m a huge “look you in the eye” kind of person, so it’s obvious when the other person isn’t. I try not to be creepy about it, though, and sometimes, if doing it for too long, get cross-eyed.
11. What color pants are you wearing?
I got some mint green pj pants for Christmas with sledding cats and “meowy Christmas” on them. It’s near the end of February. They make me happy.
13. If you were a crayon what color would you be?
Blair’s answer to this was poop brown. I don’t think I’d want to be a bodily excrement color! My color would be “Maximum Blue Green.” Best of both worlds and top of its game.
19. Scary movies or happy endings?
I can’t watch scary movies, because I then believe in things that I previously hadn’t heard of and can’t sleep alone. So happy endings. But I actually like the movies where the ending is not cliched happy the best. It’s okay to leave the viewer with a mellow ending that prompts thinking about life.
20. Last movie you watched?
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. My brother and I are rewatching all the Peter Jackson Tolkien tributes. We’re currently 2/3s of the way through the extended edition of Battle of the Five Armies and it makes me so happy to have this to look forward to this evening!
23. Night owl or early bird?
Early bird. One hundred pro. Even if I take about an hour to meander from bedroom to kitchen to my writing table, I love the feeling of waking up in the morning and starting a new day. I’m usually too tired by 2300 to notice it’s also a part of the day.
24. Favorite day of the week?
I love Saturdays. It’s the weekend and buffered by one other day before the new week starts. I can do ANYTHING on a Saturday, planned or unplanned, and still have Sunday to recover.
25: Which three of your favorite bloggers do you want to know more about?
Like Blair, I just “want to know more about a lot of people – so I’m not going to nominate. I’d love to read everyone’s response. So, if you want to fill out the questions and post them, make sure you let me know in the comments so I can go read them.”
Thanks for saving me some typing, Blair.
Great questions and lovely to learn so much about you, Dorothea! I can well imagine how that would get mispronounced by English speakers – I had the same problem with my maiden name! Oh, I love the sound of your pants with sledding cats – the mind boggles! Wonderful questions by Blair and I’ll probably have a go at these soon!

Thanks for your reply and look forward to learning more about you!
The name struggle is real, but it’s just another unique thing about me that people get to wrap their head around.

All very fun stuff!! I love these Q&A sessions! But I’m dying to know, have I been pronouncing your name wrong? Or am I in the right? Can you enunciate it for me pretty please?

I posted a pronunciation just for you (and everyone else who was now worried about something they never saw as an issue before). Don’t worry, I still like you even if you probably would have pronounced it wrong the first time. Plus, my nickname is Doro…which is much easier.just remember, the r is hard!

Okay, now I’m SURE I’m reading your name wrong, too. Here in the States I’d just think it is “Dorothee” but now I know I’m wrong! What’s the right way? Also, I’m an eye-contact-person, too. If I ever meet you in person we are going to have the most epic staring contest there is. Who feels awkward/looks away first?

You’d probably win. Or not. Now I have to know! You have to let me know next time you’re in south Florida/Berlin.
Also, I’ve posted the pronunciation now to satisfy your curiosity. 🙂

Damn, I wish I was going to Berlin anytime soon haha. And… I NEVER would have looked at your name and pronounced it like that! Or even guessed that as an option. Has ANYONE ever got it right on the first try? Haha

Germans do 😉

How fun! My handwriting is terrible, but I don’t mind it. lolll

you could rest assured that in Brazil your name wouldn’t be mispronounced. 😉

I know. 🙂 nor in Italy, Greece, Hungary, many African languages…though I’m not sure about Japan/China or South Asia

in japanese i’m pretty sure there will be no confusion. your family name though will face a slight change, as the language doesn’t have consonant clusters (nor trailing consonants). my name for instance becomes erumesu (Hermes)…

My brother is studying Japanese, I should ask him about that!

i miss the days i was studying that language. lately i’ve trying to tackle Deutsch… about to start B1.1 but i’m feeling totally stuck. i sit on the couch to watch d-w and the only things i get are a few words/sentences. 😦

I loved your answers Dorothea… I wonder whether you will marry a poet? Or become a poetess yourself? I tend to stare at people too… my kids tell me off for it, but I don’t think I’ve ever gone cross-eyed at least not to my knowledge!

I think I may become a writer, and if my partner is a poet, I’m not opposed. 🙂 but I won’t put any pressure on myself or my partner!
And staring is not a problem! I find it’s just important to be honest about what one is thinking while doing so, and keeping those thoughts nice.

Perfect – hope you find your poet! Keep on staring, being honest and nice that sounds like a very good policy. 🙂

These types of posts always make me laugh. And those pants sound like they would make me happy too.

My first name doesn’t get mispronounced but it always gets spelled wrong. Now, if I were with you in Germany, I probably wouldn’t have that problem. I haven’t had my tonsils since I was 2. I am with you on early bird and happy endings (scary movies give me nightmares). I think Saturdays are my favorite day too thought Friday evenings come in a close second.

Ah, Friday evenings. I’d like them if I weren’t just so darn tired!
And Stefanie is the German spelling! Yay! And you have to give English speakers credit for wanting to pronounce all the letters. 🙂 a silent h? What?

But on Friday evenings the whole weekend is still ahead with all its vast possibilities! Yes it is the German spelling. The entire side of my dad’s family is German but I am not certain my parents realized the spelling was German, I think they were just going for something different 🙂

Ah. Still cool.
And oh, I know! Friday has the most potential! But I’m usually too tired to think of it. 🙂 I know, I’m a 25 year old 60 year old.

Thanks for sharing your answers! I’m surprised your tonsils were removed so early!

I was very ill with severe tonsillitis more than once so the doctor decided it was best to take them out. From what my mom tells me it was pretty bad so I am glad I have no memory of it!

Those sure are unusual questions! 😀
I went through some of your posts and I love them! With the range of topics you write on though, it ‘ll take me a while to go through them all but I sure ‘ll! Brace yourself for notifications! 😀
Cheers!
Keep blogging!
P.S. I used to love watching scary movies even if gave me sleepless nights. But I gave them up since I started trekking at night cos you don’t want to be the guy makes people jump down the valley by screaming at the slightest sound 😀

Oh! Thanks for the kind words and your interest! Yeah, I guess I have a spread of topics.
Your trekking adventures seem fun too… I’m following! And yea, a lot of scary movies have things happen in dark woods. It wouldn’t do well to imagine things that aren’t there!
